Qualified, quiet diary? Check your OMF

The short answer
If you have qualified and your diary is empty, the problem is usually one of three things, and OMF tells you which. OMF comes from Robert Craven, who broke business down to Operations plus Marketing equals Financial. Operations is what you deliver and how well. Marketing is how often you tell the right people you exist and how easy you make it to book you. Financial is counting what came in and not spending too much of it. Most quiet diaries are a marketing problem being treated as a knowledge problem, which is why the answer people reach for, another course, so rarely works. The FASTER Business Accelerator is £500, or £100 deposit and 5 monthly payments of £80, plan total £500.
Key Takeaways
- OMF is Robert Craven's formula: Operations + Marketing = Financial.
- An empty diary is almost never an Operations problem, though that is where trainers spend their money.
- Price is not a report card on your ability. It is a filter for the clients you want.
Where you are right now
You passed. You are a trainer. You have no clients, or four.
The gym your training company partnered with wants its rent, and the business advice on offer is a laminated sheet about smiling on the gym floor.
Meanwhile everyone online wants to make you a six-figure income. None of them train anyone like you train, and none of them have met your Tuesday.
Somebody should have just said: oi, check your OMF.
Operations, and the trap inside it
Operations is your service and your product. Your knowledge, your experience, your ability to deliver something a person enjoys, and your ability to adapt and communicate while it is happening.
The industry sells this bit as a shed load of skills. Usually CPD that repeats what you already know, in a new font.
So here is a thing I will say plainly. Learn to hold pads before you learn GP referral.
Pad work makes you the trainer somebody books again on Thursday. GP referral is the most over-hyped and least useful course I have read, and it only lost the title because the lower back course exists.
That is not a dig at you for buying one. The conveyor belt is built to sell those, and it is very good at it.
Marketing, which is where your problem actually is
Marketing is how well and how often you tell people what you do. Being present. Reminding the people who might need you that you exist. Making it stupidly easy to sign up.
It used to be walk the gym floor, wear the shirt round town, drop a couple of leaflets. Now it is a marketing suite that matches what you can actually keep up with. The suite matters less than the keeping up.
And price sits in Marketing, not Operations. Read that again if you have ever discounted yourself because you felt like a fraud.
Your price is not a score out of ten for how good you are. That is retention. Price is a filter that attracts the clients you want to sell to.
Most lost clients are not lost. They just went two weeks without hearing from anyone and filled the slot with something else.
Financial, which is the boring one
Finances get simple when the first two are working. Do a great job. Find people who want a great job doing. Then count your money and do not spend too much of it.
Budget. Cash flow. That is the whole subject at your stage.
There is a version of this industry that wants you to skip straight to the spreadsheet and the tax planning while you have four clients. Ignore it.
How to use OMF this week
Take your empty diary and put it against the three letters.
Operations. Do the people who train with you come back? If retention is fine, your delivery is fine. Stop buying courses to fix a problem you do not have.
Marketing. How many people who could need you heard from you this week? If the answer is nobody, you have found it.
Financial. Do you know what you took last month and what you spent? If not, that is an hour's job, not a course.
Nine times out of ten the letter that is broken is M, and the money gets spent on O.
Frequently asked questions
What does OMF stand for?
Operations plus Marketing equals Financial. The framework comes from Robert Craven's seminar and book, and it underpins how FASTER teaches business. Operations is delivery, Marketing is being known and bookable, Financial is what results.
Why is my diary empty when I am a good trainer?
Because being good is Operations and being booked is Marketing. They are different problems. Trainers usually respond to an empty diary by buying more knowledge, which improves the letter that was already working.
Should I lower my price to get clients?
Price is a filter for the clients you want, not a measure of your ability. Dropping it changes who turns up rather than how many. Fix how often the right people hear from you first.
